The Joystick Journey — AU Adaptive

With Auburn Football approaching, the excitement for sports has risen tremendously and the Auburn University Wheelchair Basketball Team is eager to get started on strengthening and conditioning for the season. The Wheelchair Basketball team is a combination of Auburn students and local participants. I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and talk to Jared Rehm, a graduate student at Auburn University and the head coach of the team and Nathan Waters, the disability specialist in the Office of Accessibility. I was very surprised and excited to hear about all the wonderful things that people with various disabilities can do within the sports community. It is very important for people with disabilities to stay active and involved, what better way to do it than to play some basketball. I am a huge sports fanatic so this sounds so fun to me, and oddly enough I had no clue this was in the area.

I look forward to seeing what I can do to contribute to such a wonderful thing on the plains in the future. If you would like to volunteer and help with the team, you can contact Nathan Waters (waterjn@auburn.edu) Jared Rehm (jmr0020@auburn.edu) or call the disability office at 334-844-2096 and ask for either of them. Also, Check out their blog (http://auadaptive.org/) and the website (https://fp.auburn.edu/disability/sports.asp) once the semester starts to keep up with the great things they are doing!
