Johnson graduated from Auburn in 1974, then briefly worked as a reporter and in the public relations department of Auburn University. In the years before "Arlo and Janis," from about 1980 to 1985, Johnson drew cartoons professionally for newspapers on a part-time basis as a reporter and editor, and then full-time as an editorial cartoonist. As a Mississippi editorial cartoonist, Johnson won the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Award. From 1985 to the present, Johnson has drawn "Arlo and Janis" for national syndication by NEA. His collected work, "Beaucoup Arlo and Janis," is arranged chronologically, and the works within create an arresting time-line that registers the change and growth of "Arlo and Janis" over 25 years. It’s the best of the humor that made "Arlo and Janis" one of the most popular comic strips among newspaper readers wherever it appears. * Book Event w/Jack WattsBook Event w/Jack Watts

Time: 4:00 pm

The Gnu's Room hosts Georgia author Jack Watts for a reading from his most recent work, "Hi, My Name is Jack." In this grippingly honest narrative about one man’s journey from addiction and self-destruction to recovery and a changed life, readers will be dismayed at the hurtful patterns of his two alcoholic parents and how they scarred and shaped the outcome of their three sons forever. Watts openly talks of his multiple failed marriages, strained relationships with his children, overwhelming business losses, and the self-loathing and guilt that plagued him for years. In spite of all of this, Jack held on to the conviction he made more than fifteen years ago never to drink again. Gradually learning to make better choices, he discovered how to move past deeply engraved dysfunctions and become a productive, loving adult. Included are accounts of his efforts to live out the twelve steps in restoring relationships with family members and confronting the offender who molested his three daughters. Jack Watts has an A.B., from Georgia State University; an M.A., from Baylor University; and has completed everything except his dissertation for a Ph.D. from Emory University. He has worked for nearly three decades in marketing, exclusively serving Christian ministries and publishers. If you are unable to attend the event but would like a signed/inscribed copy, please contact us at 334.821.5550 to reserve your copy.

* Krewe of Redeux CelebrationKrewe of Redeux Celebration

Time: 2:00 pm

Each spring the Krewe of Redeux (pronounced "re-do") parades through the streets of Auburn to their masquerade ball. Why Redeux? Because the costumes, masks, floats and throws are made of re-purposed, recycled materials, and because it is a redeux of Mardi Gras just AFTER the carnival season. Why stop at Fat Tuesday when you can celebrate again on Fatter Saturday? And what better way to mooch off of other parades than by gathering trinkets to throw all over again (and again, and again). The current of Mardi Gras is channeled up into the plains of Auburn to open the floodgates of fun and foolery. This year the Krewe of Redeux converges on Southside to expand the fun to all who wish to participate. The Gnu's Room, Perch Bead Studio and Faunhouse invite people of all ages to come between 2:00 and 5:00 to take part in the festivities by having their faces painted, by decorating a parade parasol, or by stringing recycled beads for tossing during the parade, which begins at 5:30. Bring your kazoo (or other musical instrument or noise maker), hula hoop, baton, and umbrella and deck out in your most colorful outfit to march in the 0.5 mile parade. There is no charge for any of the festivities, including the parade, but if you want to take part in the Krewe of Redeux "Ball" (cajun food and music) you may purchase tickets at the parade's end route destination and eat and dance the evening away on Virginia Avenue!

* A Taste of SpainA Taste of Spain

Time: 7:00 pm

Experience a taste of Spain at The Gnu's Room with author Diana Renfro, author of Spanish Doors: A Journey Through Spain. Renfro, an Auburn graduate, received her Masters' Degree from Florida State in Foods and Nutrition. A former resident of Opelika, Alabama, Renfro currently resides on a farm in Grassy Creek, North Carolina. She has written her first novel thanks to a Regional Artist Program grant from the Charlotte Mecklenberg Arts and Science Council and a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council providing for her work as a writer-in-residence at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California. Renfro's novel, Spanish Doors aims to take the reader on an emotional journey. A woman's frustrating yet hopeful search for her father, is a message of forgiveness and salvation peppered with the comfort of good food and wine on the protagonist's pilgrimage across Spain. Renfro will join us in creating a special evening with the demonstration of two Spanish customs - a porron and a queimada - offering volunteers a chance to participate. The reading will be accompanied by Spanish tapas by our own Chef Galen Hagerty. The event is free and open to the public.
