The Gnu's Room

Music with Laura Balke & John Davey — Saturday, January 14

From 6:00 p.m. to 7:59 p.m. on Saturday (ending just in time for the bag sale) The Gnu’s Room hosts Laura Balke and John Davey, acoustic singer/songwriters from Indiana, who are on their Snowbird Tour through the South. There is no cover for the event, but any donations or CD purchases will go to the musicians to help them reach their next destination.

Laura K Balke has been writing songs for as long as her memory stretches. The silly ramblings of childhood took a new turn when she picked up her mother’s guitar at the age of 13, and began crafting tunes that would eventually culminate in three independently released full-length albums and countless shows across the country. Drawing from influences such as Neil Young and John Vanderslice, Balke places her confessional lyrics atop sometimes simple, sometimes surprising instrumentation.

John Davey is an independent singer-songwriter hailing from West Lafayette, Indiana. Since the summer of 2007 Davey has been writing, recording, traveling and playing shows as his full-time occupation. His essentially folk and sonically pop songs reflect his time on the road and are often ruminations on the toll that traveling takes and the high cost of relationships. With a solid foundation of influence in pop and folk music as well as a wide array of classic literature and folklore, John Davey’s songs also vicariously reminisce about days of yore.
